1. Introduction
Hum (“we”, “us”, “our”) is a voice-first social app operated by Expient. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you use the Hum app or website, how we use and protect it, and the rights you have over your data. We’ve tried to write it in plain language. If anything is unclear, please write to us — our contact details are at the end.
2. Data We Collect
We collect only what we need to run the Service. That’s it.
What we collect:
- Phone number — used once at signup for OTP verification, and then kept as the account identifier.
- Username — chosen by you. Pseudonymous.
- Gender — selected during onboarding.
- Date of birth — used only to confirm you are 18 or older.
- Interest tags — the conversation topics you select.
- Warmth Score — calculated from your in-app behaviour.
- Device information — app version and operating system version, for technical support and crash reporting.
What we do not collect: your real name, email address, photos, precise or coarse location, browsing history, contact list, or any biometric data.
3. Voice Conversations
All voice calls on Hum use industry-standard end-to-end encryption. We do not record, store, transcribe, or monitor the content of your calls. We retain basic call records to maintain your conversation history inside the app.
4. How We Use Your Data
We use the data listed above only to:
- Provide the Hum service — matching, calling, Warmth Score, conversation history.
- Verify your age and eligibility.
- Enforce our Terms of Service and community guidelines.
- Improve the app’s stability and fix bugs.
We do not use your data for targeted advertising, behavioural profiling, sale to third parties, or to train AI or machine-learning models.
5. Data Storage & Security
Your data is stored on secure cloud infrastructure with encryption at rest and in transit. Access to user data is limited to authorised members of the Hum team for support and safety purposes only, and is logged.
6. Data Retention
We retain your personal data for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account through the in-app settings, all personal data associated with your account is permanently deleted within a reasonable period, except where we are required to retain specific records to comply with a legal obligation.
7. Your Rights Under Applicable Indian Law
In accordance with applicable provisions of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, and other applicable Indian data protection laws, you have the following rights:
- Right to access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Right to correction — ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
- Right to erasure — delete your account and all associated data.
- Right to withdraw consent — at any time, for any processing based on consent.
- Right to grievance redressal — contact us at support@expient.com or file a complaint with the Data Protection Board of India.
8. Children’s Data
Hum is for users aged 18 and above only. We collect date of birth at signup for this purpose. If we become aware that a user is under 18, we will immediately suspend the account and permanently delete all associated data.
We take child safety seriously, with a zero-tolerance policy and active reporting.
9. Cookies & Website
The Hum website on expient.in uses only essential cookies required for the site to function. We do not use tracking cookies, analytics cookies, or advertising cookies. We do not use Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, or any third-party tracking.
10. Third-Party Services
Hum relies on third-party service providers for essential functions, including data storage, voice call infrastructure, and phone number verification. These providers are selected for their security practices and adherence to applicable data protection standards. We do not share any personal data with third parties for advertising or profiling purposes.
11. International Data Transfers
Your personal data is processed and stored within India. If we ever expand operations to regions that require data to be stored elsewhere, we will update this policy and, where required, seek your explicit consent.
12. Governing Law
This Privacy Policy is governed by the laws of India. Any disputes shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of courts in Bangalore, Karnataka.
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we’ll notify you through the app. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page will always reflect the latest version.
